Why We Like It: If you only want to buy one car seat for your child from birth to grade school, the Graco 4Ever All-in-One could be what you are looking for. This convertible seat has a 10-year lifespan and incorporates many features designed to make it a great buy for the long haul. With six-position recline settings and a 10-position headrest; the Graco is designed to easily adjust to your growing child. Let’s break it down according to the four main positions to see how the Graco 4Ever measures up.

The first three recline positions are designed for use in rear-facing mode. This allows you to adjust the seat according the size and age of your infant. One of the best features about this seat is that, with a few simple adjustments, it can accommodate a preemie of four pounds as comfortably as it can a toddler. The infant head pillow and body insert provides comfort and support to keep your baby in position, and the seat can continue to protect your toddler in rear-facing mode up to 40lbs.

When you convert the seat to a forward-facing booster with harness, your child can dig into those dual cup holders for drinks and snacks. The fourth incline position makes the occasional car nap a thing of comfort and beauty (and peaceful quiet for moms). Once your growing child reaches the magic number of 42 – pounds, not years – you can remove the harness and switch to the seat belt for the high-backed booster seat, which should be used upright, the sixth setting. The harness stores conveniently in its own special compartment. Going backless gives your older child a stable base for proper seat belt use, and it’s easy as pie to convert for moms and dads.

So we’ve talked about the convenience and lifespan of the Graco 4Ever, but we are just as impressed with some of the other features. The steel-reinforced frame and energy-absorbing foam meet all the crash test standards, including side-impact collisions. It also has an easy-to-remove washable seat cover, which you need if you expect to get a decade’s use out of it. You don’t even have to rethread the harness straps to clean it!

Cons: A few parents noticed a rattling sound in the booster’s headrest, which can be an annoying on a road trip (although most didn’t hear anything). Another issue that a few parents noted was some trouble getting the straps tight enough, but you can resolve that by watching this video to learn more about installation.

It’s a lot to ask one car seat to do everything for every family, but the Graco 4Ever All-In-One Convertible comes as close as any all-in-ones we’ve seen. With safety features, durability, longevity, and comfort, this seat may be the one for you.
